Social & cultural reactivation

In Romania, the cultural heritage is nationally recognised as, along with contemporary creations, the main area of interest of national cultural actions and policies, according to the Strategy for Culture and National Heritage 2016-2022. At the country level, more and more initiatives and projects based on the development of both the cultural heritage and various visual and artistic expressions are emerging. And yet, although there is major progress in the cultural segment as well as in non-governmental organisations in the domain, public access to cultural heritage and various forms of artistic expression is still limited. The vision of our project and its opportunity are built on these needs. We use creativity not only as a form of promoting heritage and various visual arts, but also as a factor in the development of a long-term cultural product with impact in various sectors. The project is at the confluence of creativity, architecture and the use of new technologies to support the cultural pillar as a factor of sustainable development, social development and diversification of the existing cultural offer on the market. The social and cultural reactivation of the historical centre of the resort town of Herculane Baths envisages a series of cultural and educational projects, which aim to involve the general public in the reactivation of the cultural heritage of the Baths.

General objectives:

  • Stimulating the social and cultural development;
  • Supporting cultural diversity and using culture as a factor of dialogue between various communities;
  • Promoting the cultural heritage of the Romanian territory and increasing the level of awareness of the connection between heritage objects and visual art, as a form of cultural expression;
  • Supporting cultural production and various ways of expression;
  • Creating an educational framework for training future specialists in the field.

The Architecture Bath

The summer school project was implemented for the first time in the summer of 2018, with a complex pedagogical program. This included theoretical activities and field trips for restoration, historical urban studies to discover techniques for enhancing architecture in the Austrian Baroque style, and the complete process of creating an urban installation with the role of gathering the community, relaxation and play, from the concept stage to the inauguration. From this point of view, the 2018 edition of the summer school not only brought to the attention of specialists and the general public a new architecture program in the field of tourism and contributed to the multidisciplinary training of future experts in the field, but also enriched the urban environment and the life of the local community with an urban installation, thus amplifying the impact of the project.
The second edition (2019) was focused on the recovery of a space in waiting in the historic centre that in the past was defined by a promenade and a gazebo on the banks of the Cerna. 16 students over the course of 10 days, designed and executed on the spot a relaxation space to support cultural and community activities – the Naiada Pavilion. The project is co-financed by the Romanian Order of Architects through the Architecture Stamp and by the Prince’s Foundation and is supported by the Herculane Baths City Hall, the Timiș Branch of the Romanian Order of Architects and the Caras-Severin County Directorate for Culture.

HerculTURA

The Locus Association initiated, organised and guided architectural tours through Herculane Baths. In 2018, more than 500 people benefited from these tours, including His Excellency, the Ambassador of Great Britain Paul Brummell.

Herculane Baths Cultural Site

Herculane Baths Cultural Site proposed a hybrid of cultural events that would combine the fascination of the architectural heritage of the Herculane Baths with visual arts (e.g. mural painting, sculpture, interventions in the public space, digital animation, etc.) and the community. The project was aimed at using the power of community heritage regeneration and mediating between several categories of public by reactivating an unused space, valuable from an architectural and historical points of view, and organising activities with a triple role: interpreting the built heritage of the resort for tourists and the community, to move the attention from the past to the present and the future by creating and presenting creations of contemporary art, and to create a space where the local community can share in turn its skills, talents and concerns.
Among the activities we would like to mention art workshops, children’s workshops, architecture tours, modelling workshops. Among the guests were Dona Arnakis, Linda Barkasz, Gabriel Cosma, Alin Popa, Radu Popovici, Ilie Duță, Gabriel Ursu, Matei Păcurar, Levente Kozma and Mihai Drăgan.
The project is co-financed by the Romanian Order of Architects through the Architecture Stamp and by the Prince’s Foundation and is supported by the Herculane Baths City Hall, the Timiș Branch of the Romanian Order of Architects and the Caras-Severin County Directorate for Culture.

I Got Marked

One of the most important objectives of the Association is to include the Architectural Ensemble from Herculane Baths in the UNESCO heritage. This approach was started by initiating a campaign, as well as a dialogue with various State Institutions, and members of various UNESCO committees from abroad.
